Top cueists clash in Sarawak Closed Snooker Championsh­ip

KUCHING: The Sarawak Closed Snooker Championsh­ip has received an overwhelmi­ng response with 84 top cueists including state players from all over Sarawak confirming their participat­ion in the competitio­n at Q Master Snookerium in Hui Sing from April 8 to 15.

Adelighted­organising chairman Steven Chay told The Borneo Post that this is the biggest competitio­n in terms of participat­ion in the last 20 years.

“We have the biggest number of 57 cueists from Kuching while there are 12 from Sibu, eight from Sarikei, four from Bintulu and three from Miri.

“This event is organised by the Sarawak Billiard Snooker Sport Federation ( SBSSF) with the objectives of providing a platform for the cueists to display their skills, enhance friendship as well as promoting the sport in the state,” he said.

According to Chay, who is the owner of Q Master Snookerium, the competitio­n will be based on a knock- out system.

“The first round will be based on the best of three games, the last 32 will be best of five while from the quarterfin­als to the final, it will be played on the best of seven games.

“SBSST i s viewi ng t h i s championsh­ip as an important one because this is also the platform where we will be choosing the semifinali­sts to represent Sarawak in the national championsh­ip in Kuala Lumpur later this year,” he added.

The organiser is also offering lucrative prizes for the winners, with the champion bringing home RM2,000 and a trophy, second placing RM800 and trophy, semifinali­sts RM300 and a trophy each while the losing quarterfin­alists will each receive RM150 and a trophy.

Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil has been invited to grace the opening on April 8 and the closing on April 15.

Snooker enthusiast­s and fans are encouraged to turn up to watch the matches as entrance is free.
