Parental objection aside, association hopes more Chinese join the armed forces

-

SIBU: The Sarawak branch of ExRoyal Malaysian Navy Association is calling on Sarawakians, particularly Chinese youths, to join the armed forces.

Its chairman Thomas Ling said while he hopes to see more from the Chinese community serve the nation, he understands that most parents are reluctant for their children to join.

“Even though there are job prospects in the armed forces, most Chinese parents are against the idea of their children entering the service,” he said in a press conference yesterday. According to him, one of the reasons behind the reluctance could be the thought of their children having to one day enter the battlefield.

“There are many sections you can serve in, such as a clerk in the office or a cook in the kitchen, or even be part of the logistics team.

“Those who join the armed forces these days can also expect generous remuneration for their services,” he added.

Ling urged parents whose children have completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) to encourage their children to enter the armed forces.

“We (association) are always ready to enlighten you on what your children can expect as a member of the armed forces. Drop by our office at Jalan Tuanku Osman here, or call us on 084-348872.

“After all, life is challenging these days and it is not so easy to secure a job. Joining the armed forces should be considered as an option,” he said.
