11 held as police ramp up statewide war on drugs
MIRI: Eleven jobless men were rounded up in two separate raids here on Monday for alleged involvement in drug- related activities.
Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) head Supt Sahar Abdul Latif said both ambushes took place at Pujut Padang Kerbau following a combination of public tip- offs and intelligence gathering.
“The first raid took place around 1pm at a house and saw four locals, aged between 32 and 46, arrested for alleged drug peddling.
“Seized from them were 89 straw tube segments weighing 18.98 grammes, containing substance believed to be Syabu,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The drugs, added Sahar, is estimated to be worth about RM2,800.
According to him, the four men are believed to have been actively peddling drugs since early last year, with three of them also tested positive for methamphetamine.
The case has been classified under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for narcotics possession, and Section 15(1)(a) of the same act for drug abuse.
The four were yesterday ordered to be remanded for a period of two days by a magistrate’s court here to allow further investigation to be carried out.
Police had originally applied for a four- day remand, but Magistrate Kasyfurrahman Abang Ahmad granted a two- day remand which will end today ( March 14).
Meanwhile, in the second ambush, Sahar revealed that police nabbed seven men at another house in Pujut Padang Kerbau the same afternoon for alleged drug abuse.
“Urine tests conducted on all seven found them to be positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine,” he said, adding the suspects were detained for investigation under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug abuse.
