MIRI: The Piasau Zhong Hua Wushu is recruiting more members particularly among students in its efforts to develop the sport.

Its deputy president Wong Teck Hua said the club played an important role as a centre to produce wushu athletes for the state.

“The club has rented the badminton court of Miri Chawan Association as a venue to provide training for members.

“This place has been recognised by Sarawak Sport Council as a wushu development centre for Miri District. A big thank you to the association for supporting the club in our development programme,” he said at the club’s Orientation Day held at Miri Chawan Association badminton court yesterday.

Wong disclosed that the club was also providing training for members at Beach Republic Gym Studio here while its elite athletes were undergoing training at a shop lot at the Bumiko area.

“It has not been an easy task as we have been given the trust to be in charge of high performance sport which demands us to produce a pool of young talented wushu athletes for the state.

“Thus, there is a need for us to further intensify our recruitment drive to attract more young people to join our wushu sport development programme.”

More than 30 students from various schools here attended the orientation day which was officiated at by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

Lee who is Senadin assemblyman wanted the club to recruit more Bumiputera students as members.

He said sport is a universal game and should not be monopolised by any particular group of people.

“I hope to see more Bumiputera students joining your wushu sport programme as this would also augur well for racial unity.”

He assured that he would give his full support to the wushu development programme in order to make Miri a power house for the sport.
