GPS should start preparation for next state election, says Batu Kitang rep

KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) should capitalise on the barely satisfactory performance of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government since May last year to remain in power come the 12th state election.

In making this point Friday night, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said GPS ought to start preparing for the next state polls since the PH Sarawak had worked on its election preparation.

The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) lawmaker also hoped that his party could decide on its recommended candidates sooner rather than later so that they could be better prepared for the coming battle.

“PH government has been making u-turns in its policymaking and decisions, not to mention that they have yet to fulfill some of their election promises particularly the recognition of Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), 20 per cent oil and gas royalties for Sarawak and returning 50 per cent of the revenue collected from Sarawak back to Sarawak.

“People are very disappointed with the PH government’s performance thus far. Because of this, GPS has (an) absolute chance to defeat PH Sarawak,” he said at the SUPP Batu Kitang branch’s Lunar New Year dinner here.

Lo, who is Padawan Municipal Council chairman, said the Sarawak government had set aside an amount of fund for several development projects in his constituency.

According to him, among the projects are the upgrading of roads and drains in Batu Kitang.

He observed that some people have been leading a difficult life due to the rising cost of living, saying the scenario was different from what the PH government used to say - that people would see an improved life.

He said the Sarawak government, under the leadership of Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, had imposed the five per cent sales tax on petroleum products, and he had confidence the Chief Minister would come up with even better policies to defend the interests of Sarawakians.

Lo called on the people of Sarawak to give their undivided support to the local-based coalition GPS in the next state election.

He added that PH Sarawak, which comprised four peninsulabased political parties, would not be sincere in fighting for the state’s rights.

Among those present were Local Government and Housing Minister and SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and Temenggong Tan Joo Phoi.
