Teacher killed in car-pick-up truck crash

SARIKEI: A 40-year- old teacher was killed in an accident involving a car and a pick-up truck in Nansang, KM36 Pakan Road near here yesterday afternoon, while four others, including three in the pick-up, sustained minor injuries.

Another car which was following the car landed in a ditch by the roadside in the driver’s attempt to avoid hitting the latter.

The driver, who was travelling alone, emerged unscathed.

Sarikei District Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) chief Suna Kaha believed that the accident could have happened around 1.30pm as they received a distress call of the accident at 1.32pm.

Suna said when his men arrived at the scene about 25 minutes later, they were informed by the other victims that a driver was trapped in his car, which ended up in the ditch after the collision.

Bomba personnel took about half an hour to free the trapped driver.

However, he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, who arrived in an ambulance.

According to witnesses at the scene, the deceased who was teaching at a school in Pakan was on his way back to his house in Bintangor, while the pick-up was travelling in the opposite direction, when the fatal crash happened.

Traffic policemen were later seen at the scene to conduct an investigat­ion.
