Miri exponents eye more wushu glory
MIRI: The Mi r i Wushu Association ( MWA) has enjoyed a considerably success so far this year, clinching four overall champion titles and a secondplaced finish in a tournament held in the peninsula.
According to MWA chief coach Tiong Ching Chiong, their most recent achievement was lifting the championship crown of the 5th Sarawak Invitational Wushu and Lion Dance competitions held here on Sept 15.
Miri won the wushu category and finished fourth in the lion dance competition.
A total of 250 exponents from Miri, Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Brunei took part in the one- day competition.
Kapitan Chai Kuen Ming, who was representing Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, gave away the prizes and officially closed the competition.
It was organised by MWA i n col laborat ion wit h t he Sarawak State Sports Council, Sarawak Wushu and Lion Dance Association, with sponsorship from Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd.
“Our exponents have trained very hard and I am happy with their performance.
“MWA now h as a total of four overall champion titles to its name so far this year,” Tiong said when contacted by The Borneo Post on Thursday.
They also won the Sarawak Open Wushu Competition in Mukah in June, the Independent Chinese School Sarawak Open Wushu Competition in Sibu in July, and the Labuan Borneo International Wushu competition also held in July.
MWA were runner up at the Independent Chinese School Wushu competition in Perak.
Tiong said their next target is the International Invitational Wushu Competition which will be held in Kuching in November this year.
“We hope to win many prizes i f not winning the overal l champion in this competition, and to add to our collection of over 400 medals this year,” he said.
