JKR ordered to inspect crack at Kapit Terminal

KAPIT: The Public Works Department ( JKR) has been ordered to inspect a crack across the cement wall of the new Kapit Terminal building extension.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, who is Minister of Infrastructure Development and Transportation, said the crack is on the first floor of the building.

“How could this be? If it is a cement crack, then it is alright because that is a facial crack but if the crack is caused by a structural design fault, then it is very serious. The whole building may be at risk.

“I don’t want that to happen. As you can see, the beam extends from one end to another end without the support of any column or pillar. I suspect the crack up there is because of the structural design without a column to support the weight. I have instructed the structural engineer from the Public Works Department to conduct a thorough check to confirm the cause of the crack,” he said when inspecting the recently completed extension.

He stressed a thorough check is necessary to prevent any mishap from occurring once the building is in use.

The extension includes a new walkway, accessible toilet, and Sarawak Rivers Board office.

“In the design, the new walkway is for cargo and goods from the express boat. The original walkway is for the comfort and convenience of passengers only. In this way, it will prevent foul smells and overcrowding at the terminal,” Masing added. RM4.5 million
