Internal security under control — Masir

KUCHING: Malaysia’s internal security is still very much under control as the police have a special unit called the Special Task Force for Anti-Vice, Gaming and Gangsteris­m ( STAGG) to tackle various issues related to gangsteris­m and vices, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Masir Kujat.

“But I would like to appeal to the society at large to continue to work together with the police to address any issue related to our internal security and we cannot leave everything to the police alone.

“On the part of the police, it already has STAGG which will continue to work relentless­ly to ensure that the country will remain peaceful,” Masir told The Borneo Post here yesterday.

He was commenting on recent news report which quoted Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as saying that the police would continue to carry out operations against secret societies.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Minister of Home Affairs, made the comment in the wake of a brazen murder in Johor Baru l as t S unday a f t er a man was brutally murdered and ran over by a car at a petrol station in Taman Pelangi. The incident has shocked the nation as it was recorded by a witness and later uploaded into the Internet.

On a separate issue, Masir urged the local people to be on high alert due to the increasing cases of drug abuses in Sri Aman division.

“In this regards, I would like to urge community leaders to watch over their charges. So too, the civil servants, especially teachers must play positive roles in combating the menace,” he said, adding that Sri Aman has been identified as one of the 178 high risk areas on drug abuse in the country.

He also hoped that the setting up of the Anti-Drug Agency office in Sri Aman recently will assist the local community to tackle the menace head- on.

Meanwhi le, Masir who is Sri Aman MP said his election machinery had been activated to prepare for the upcoming 14th general election which he predicted to be held in the first quarter of next year.
