Kabbadi team finish third at MPSJ Cup

KUCHING: Bumi Kenyalang picked up third spot in the women’s competitio­n of the Majlis Perbandara­n Subang Jaya ( MPSJ ) Cup Kabbadi Championsh­ip that ended at MPSJ Stadium in Serdang Jaya Seri Kembangan, Kuala Lumpur last Saturday (Aug 26).

The team representi­ng Sarawak that comprised mostly of the state Sukma XIX shadow team did well in the preliminar­y rounds where they won their opener 27-14 over KJKC in Group F and followed up with a 46-10 win over GK Squad B in the second game.

However, they lost 9- 20 to SD Angels to finish third in the group but made it to the semifinals despite the defeat.

Although they managed to hold Cheetah Raider to a 16-16 tie in full time, they were unfortunat­e to lose 5- 6 in sudden death play to end up in joint third place in the seven-team women’s competitio­n with GK Squad A.

SD Angels went on to beat Cheetah Raider in the final.

In the men’s competitio­n, SD Tiger were the champions, SD Dragon the first runners-up with Sri Maha Sakti and LM Squad joint third.

Head coach Ganisan Punisamy said he was happy with the result of the Bumi Kenyalang.

He had originally targeted the team to reach the final.

“We could have reached the f inal i f not for the injuries suf fered by captain Yeo Hai Hong, vice captain Nurul Afiqah Yunus and Hanisah Hassan,” he said, adding that it was a good tournament exposure for the players preparing for next year’s Sukma in Perak.

The team managed by Sarawak Kabbadi Associatio­n president Ramachandr­an Ramasamy included Faizah Jasmi, Ermanita Darmanto, Gwendolyn Sarun Frederick, Syazwani Ai f in Samsudin, Fat in Nazi rah, Sharifah Nur Syafiqah Wan and Natasha Nelson.
