Cable thief arrested after entangling himself atop electric pole

-

LAWAS: Despite having been arrested twice for stealing electric cables, a man continued his criminal ways and was nearly killed on Monday night after he became entangled on an electric pole.

District police chief DSP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the 42-yearold suspect was spotted by members of the public dangling atop an electric pole at Hulu Trusan around 8.50pm.

“Firemen were called to the scene to bring the suspect down safely. He was then detained while a machete, shoes and a T- shirt found in the area were confiscated.

“Initial investigation found that the suspect had tried to cut the electric cable using the machete but failed,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Abang Zainal Abidin added the suspect sustained injuries on his leg and was referred to hospital for treatment.

Police are investigating the incident under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

In an unrelated case, the OCPD revealed that two Sabahan men were detained on Monday night for drug abuse at Kampung Banting.

The 29 and 36-year- old jobless suspects, from Long Pasia and Putatan respectively, both tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, he said. Police have classified the case under Section 39A(1) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
