Journalism awards offering over RM140,000 in prizes

MIRI: Entries for the Kenyalang Journalism Awards 2017 are now open with 10 categories offering over RM140,000 in prize money.

The categories are Chief Minister’s Award; Journalism Award (feature and news feature); News Reporting Award; Sports Reporting Award; Photograph­y Journalism Award; Broadcast Journalism Award; Sustainabi­lity Journalism Award; Business and Economic Journalism Award; Photo Essay Award; and Community Well-Being and Rural Developmen­t Journalism Award.

In a press release yesterday, Federation of Sarawak Journalist­s Associatio­n ( FSJA) president Andy Jong thanked the state government, Petronas, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Sarawak Shell Berhad, and other agencies for supporting the awards.

Melayu, English and Chinese; with the winning entry from each language receiving RM5,000.

The prizes for the Journalism Award, News Reporting Award, Sports Reporting Award, Sustainabi­lity Journalism Award, Business and Economic Journalism Award, as well as Community Well- being and Rural Developmen­t Journalism Award are RM3,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000 respective­ly for each of the three languages.

For the Broadcast Journalism Award, journalist­s and/or camera operators working for the electronic media in Sarawak will compete for the three prizes of RM3,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000.

The three prizes for the Photograph­y Journalism Award ( press photograph­ers only) are RM2,500, RM1,500 and RM800.

The new Photo Essay Award replaces the Best Picture Award and is open to press photograph­ers and journalist­s, with the three prizes being RM1,000, RM800, and RM500.

“It is only fair that we offer the prizes to top three winners of each category to appreciate the hard work of the journalist­s and photograph­ers,” said Jong.

Entries must have been published or broadcast between Jan 1, 2016 and Dec 31, 2016.

They must reach the Secretaria­t, Kenyalang Press Awards 2016, c/o Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) Sarawak, Jalan Crookshank, 93000 Kuching by 4pm on July 15.

Entry forms are available from KJA committee members, Kuching Division Journalist­s Associatio­n, Sibu Journalist­s Associatio­n, Institute of Rejang Journalist­s, and Northern Sarawak Journalist­s Associatio­n.
