Rep claims drainage upgrading work incomplete

KUCHING: Drainage upgrading work near the Tian Hou Gong temple at Jalan Bintawa, which was supposed to be completed last month, has been decsibed as ‘incomplete’.

Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong claimed the upgrading work also led to damage to Jalan Bintawa.

“Why did the SUPP (Sarawak United People’s Party) people go to the site but did not see the problem? The road was damaged during the construction of the drain but not repaired,” she claimed during a press conference yesterday.

“The upgrading work to unblock the drain to ease flood problems had caused damage to the road surface and poses a danger to road users, especially at night when there is insufficient street lighting.”

According to her, guard rails should be erected for safety, while grass should be planted by both sides of the drain to prevent soil erosion and further blockage.

When contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday, Kuching South City Council ( MBKS) councillor Goh Tze Hui said construction of the drain was completed but some remaining work surrounding it would be carried out soon.

“Remaining work like planting of grass. She ( Yong) doesn’t know about documentation. After construction there will be a 12-month defect liability period. Anything that is not done, the council will ask the contractor to do it.

“In case the contractor did not do the work, the government will do it later,” he explained.

He said after upgrading the earth drain to a cement drain, MBKS did not erect guard rails because the road is a straight stretch.

“If the road is a bend or there is a turning or the drain is too close to the edge of the road, we would erect guard rails. But the drain is two metres from the road,” he said.

On the road damage, Goh said MBKS has asked the contractor to resurface the section.

He said residents could request MBKS to install more street lights if they found the stretch poorly lit.
