MIRI: The 1Malaysia Internet Centre ( PI1M) at Niah, Suai recently hosted a study tour for children and parents of the Bukit Bom and Kampung Masjid Niah Kemas kindergartens in Sepupok, here.

A total of 15 children from the two kindergartens, eight parents and two teachers took part in the programme.

PI1M Niah manager Esfillizma Syukrillah said the programme aimed at providing basic exposure on information and communication technology ( ICT) to the kindergarten pupils.

“In addition, it also can provide some knowledge and exposure to the parents on how they can play a part to control the use of ICT among their children.

“Our role in PI1M is to show how kids can benefit and use ICT in the proper way so that they can familiarise themselves with current technology and do not abuse it,” he said in a statement to The Borneo Post.

During the visit, the children and parents were briefed on the E-Waste campaign where people are advised not to throw away old and unused electronic equipment but to send them to a collection point in PI1M Niah Suai to be disposed in accordance with the procedures of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Esfillizma said PI1M Niah is the only centre appointed by MCMC as a collection point for e-waste products in Miri.

The visitors were also exposed to ‘online grooming’, a method used by someone who wants to be friends with children through online applications to take advantage of them for immoral purposes.

Esfillizma said PI1M Niah also teaches children and parents to use the ‘Check Your Label’ application for checking electronic products such as smart phones, laptops and others that have been approved by the Commission.
