Collecting antiques healthy hobby, says Penguang
MIRI: Antiques are important pieces of history and must be preserved well to maintain their uniqueness.
Assistant Minister for Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, in saying this, said as an avid antique collector himself, collecting antiques was a healthy hobby.
“I started collecting antiques almost 40 years ago and this is a very good hobby because we learn to take care of things for their value,” he said at the launch of an antique exhibition at Miri Library yesterday.
Penguang hoped to see more antiques displayed so that the younger generation would get to learn how life was like many years ago.
“These antiques are very interesting and I hope members (of Miri Antique Collector) keep up the good work. I hope more people will take up this hobby.
“Preserving antiques and keeping antique collection alive helps remind us of our tradition, culture and lives of our forefathers,” he said, adding that each antique had its own unique and fascinating stories.
He thanked members of Miri Antique Collector for displaying their personal collection for the exhibition and applauded their effort in taking good care of their antiques up till this day.
The exhibition, which started on Nov 1 last year, has attracted hundreds of visitors to view the items which include beautiful ancient ceramics and vases from China, brass and copper decorative figurines, gramophones, vinyl, record players and antique radios.
The exhibition is organised with several members of the Culture, Arts and Antiques Collector Miri until Jan 31.
The collectors are Jaludin Amat secretary for Miri Antique Collector, Lee Zee Tack, Liew Nyim Joon, Law Hieng Bing, Rossna Mutang, Seldinna Jaludin, Stella Lee Da Jing, Liew Nyuk Kian, Julia Pengiran, Law Shin Chen and Masri Usan.
