‘Fantastic Beasts’ breaches RM1.35 billion overseas

LOS ANGELES: Warner Bros’ ‘Harry Potter’ spin- off ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ has breached the US$ 300 million (RM1.35 billion) mark in overseas markets.

It has topped the market in China (RM185 million) and Japan (RM70 million).

Boosted by superb openings in China and Japan, the movie conjured up an estimated US$132 million from its 67 markets for US$ 317.5 million to date overseas.

The ‘ Harry Potter’ spin- off landed top spot in China after only three days of release and also arrived at number one in Japan with a five- day bow from 966 screens.

‘Fantastic Beasts’ remained at the top of the chart in all of its key holdover markets, including the UK, South Korea, Germany and France.

To go with its bumper US$ 81.1 million ( RM365 million) North American debut, ‘Moana’ recorded a US$ 16.3 million overseas bow from its 12 territorie­s.

The animation’s sole key opening this weekend was in China where it charted second behind ‘ Fantastic Beast’s with a three- day gross of US$ 12.3 million, marking the secondhigh­est Disney Animation Studios’ three- day opening in the market behind ‘Zootopia’.

It sails into a number of territorie­s next weekend, including France, Mexico, Russia, Spain and the UK.

‘ Doctor Strange’ has now crossed the US$ 600 million mark globally to stand at US$ 616 million (RM2.77 billion), surpassing ‘Iron Man’’s US$ 585 million cumulative total.

‘Allied’ started its internatio­nal rollout in 23 markets with an estimated US$ 9.4 million overseas debut, eight per cent ahead of ‘ Bridge Of Spies’ in the same markets.

Robert Zemeckis’ latest enjoyed its best opening in France with US$ 2.8 million from 542 sites, followed by the UK with US$ 1.6 million from 501 and Spain with US$ 1.3 million from 430 screens. All three openings saw it chart second.

It opens in China and Russia next weekend, with Germany ( Dec 22) and Australia ( Dec 26) to come.
