MP: Come forward and form a ‘Perwani’

MIRI: More women, especially those aged 18 years and above, should be actively involved in voluntary work through `Komuniti Perwani 1Malaysia’.

Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, who made the call, said it was possible to form a `Perwani’ ( Women Organisation) with just 20 women.

“The government encourages woman aged 18 years and above to be involved in volunteerism.

“If they could form a `Perwani’, the government would provide some allocation to enable them to hold activities,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

`Komuniti Perwani 1Malaysia’ was launched last March 17 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during the `One Million Women Purple Walk’ campaign.

“It’s easy to form `Perwani’. Just get 20 women to register and they will get allocation from the government to finance their activities,” said Ahmad Lai.

However, he lamented that response to the programme here was lukewarm.

“The role of Perwani is simple. They are to expand and explain the initiative introduced by the government and to plan and implement community transformation programmes.

“Perwani can also be the eyes and ears of the government in curbing crimes and threats in the country.”
