MIRI: Councillors in charge of the 10 residents’ committees ( RC) in the city and newly appointed RC members will be officially sworn-in in a ceremony next month.

In announcing this yesterday, mayor Lawrence Lai said the residents’ committees had been reformed with three councillors to take charge of each of the zones and five police officers would be assigned to each zone.

“Security is a vital part of Miri City, thus we are very grateful to the decision made by Miri police chief ACP Gan Tian Kee. With the active collaboration and interaction with the police, we are confident that the city’s safety and that of the whole Miri community will be secure,” he said to a press conference after a dialogue between the police and city council.

The ten zones are City Centre, Lopeng/ Riam, Krokop/ Piasau, Lutong/ Kuala Baram, Senadin, Tudan, Permyjaya, Luak/Bakam, Pujut and Taman Tunku/ Lambir.

Meanwhile, Gan said the decision would bring about a win-win situation.

“Our senior and junior officers will be on the ground and get in touch with RC members in every zone. While they are out doing their job, patrolling the areas, they can at the same time meet the local residents so that whatever problems they have relating to safety can be brought to our officers’ attention immediately,” he told the press conference.

On the crime rate in the city, Gan said it had been reduced by about 15 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.

“With proper management, we are committed to working handin-hand with the mayor and councillors as well as the public to make the city safe,” he stressed.

The dialogue was attended by deputy mayor Mohd Chee Kadir, councillors, council staff and police officers.
