Illegal gathering against spirit of democracy — Rais

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The staging of the illegal gathering at the Kelana Jaya Stadium on Wednesday was not in line with the spirit of democracy decided by the people through the 13th general election (GE13) on Sunday.

Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the GE13 results, where the Barisan Nasional won 133 Parliamentary seats, had enabled it to form the government while the opposition pact only won 89 seats.

“As such, why should a major gathering be held (yesterday) as though they (opposition) do not accept the decision which was legally valid,” he said when met by reporters, here yesterday.

Rais said the opposition should use the legal means and make police reports to lodge their protests against the GE13 results instead of staging the illegal assembly.

“Our country is a respected nation and has its laws. It must be rememberd that if there are any allegations, use the legal avenue. Lodge a police report and take it to court.

“This is the honourable way and the best for the pakatan (opposition pact). If they (illegal assemblies) are continued at the stadiums, there will be no end to it,” he said.

Commenting on the existence of the ‘Chinese tsunami’ in the GE13 results, Rais said the BN must look at all weaknesses and overcome them to fulfill the demands of the plural society in the country.

“Talks about the big wave that had given strength to the Chinese are true, but what about the Malays? If the Malays and Muslims unite (merge), I don’t think the Chinese can determine the country’s future.

“As such, ( BN) must find its weaknesses and overcome them. Make sure that the demands made by the Chinese are not met instantly and should emphasise on the demands that favour the multi- racial society, and at the same time, Malay politics should be perceived from the real perspective,” he said.

Rais said Umno must also put forward a new formula at the Umno general assembly at the end of the year to strengthen the position of the Malays and the Malay Politics.
