Jobs in the digital world

-

COMPUTER Science is about understanding how computers work and providing solutions to real world problems – it can help us predict natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or even the outbreak of Covid19 in a certain location.

Over the last few decades, the computing field has created a myriad of jobs.

Job titles such as Programmer, Analyst Programmers, System Analyst, Systems & Network Engineer, and Database Administrators were probably the most common titles last century in the field of computing.

Now, with digital automation and rapid digitalisation, we have witnessed the creation of new job titles and roles.

These new roles, with titles such as Security Engineer, Software Engineer, Data Scientist, Cloud Computing Specialist, and Big Data Engineer are increasingly becoming most indemand jobs.

More recently, we have seen titles such as Artificial Intelligence Specialist, Machine Learning Engineer, and Data Engineer – all these jobs will require high skilled Computer Science graduates.

In addition, unlike specialised degrees, that hint at limiting job scopes, a Computer Science graduate with the right foundation, can fulfil the various roles.

Evidently, a search on popular job classified sites such as Indeed, LinkedIn, and JobStreet for the abovementioned job titles will result in thousands of vacancies in Malaysia alone, without considering the regional and global demand.

Hence, it is important for our Computer Science graduates to go through the right curriculum – one that has the right mathematical foundations for them to easily adapt to new inventions, be it a new programming language or a new computing system.

Further, a strongly established curriculum that provides the right balance of practical skills, theoretical foundations on how computers work, and up-todate specialisation electives are needed. Taking the lead to nurture purpose-driven leaders, Heriot-Watt University is committed to equipping our workforce of tomorrow with skill sets that will prepare them for the future of work.

As an example, HeriotWatt University is the first in Edinburgh, Scotland to offer its world-class programme, BSc in Computer Science degree and is accredited by the British Computer Society.

Our world-class programmes provides students with the necessary practical skills in the first year, which continues into the second year where an emphasis on providing a strong theoretical foundation to future proof our students, and finally providing streaming in Data Science or Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their final year.

Along the whole process, students will need to also complete an industrial training, a year-long globally connected group project, and a year-long individual final year project.

The possibilities are endless for a Computer Science graduate – one can later decide to specialise in a particular field, either through the numerous online programme offerings or even through pursuing a full-time postgraduate degree.

As a leading UK university known for its world-class teaching and practical, leading-edge research, students can gain both theoretical underpinnings and hands-on experience, with the strong support of the University’s academic staff, and their expansive research expertise.

This provides students with a steady foundation towards a solid future with a strong educational background.

Most importantly, our students are nurtured as purpose-driven leaders through our unique positive education approach which develops holistic individuals with character building and well-being beyond academic excellence.

In addition, Heriot-Watt University has global campuses in Putrajaya, Malaysia and in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Students would be able to learn and live in cosmopolitan cities with very different environments, and cultures.

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s purpose-built green campus in Putrajaya offers the same benefits of studying internationally for all students, especially in the Asia Pacific region. The BSc (Hons) Computing Science, aimed at preparing graduates for unprecedented challenges of the future is accessible for students in Malaysia.

Students can now apply for the University’s September 2021 intake. A range of scholarships and financial assistance is also available for qualifying students.
