SIBU: Sibu Hospital’s capacity for Covid-19 patients is almost at 75 per cent but it can still cope with the number of cases, said a senior official of the hospital.

The official, who declined to be named, said the hospital had made preparations to accommodate more cases including converting more wards into Covid wards.

“However, at the moment, we still can cater to the current needs,” he said when contacted.

The source said the Kemuyang Youth Camp would also be used to house low risk patients, while the high risk patient will be admitted to the hospital.

Sibu Hospital treats Covid-19 patients from the central zone, which includes Betong and Mukah.

Earlier today, Sibu Municipal Council Chairman Clarence Ting said on Facebook that the Sibu Hospital was running out of space to house all Covid-19 patients and was considering other options.

He said he was informed during a meeting this morning that there more Covid-19 cases were expected in Sibu.

“I urge everyone in Sibu to take extreme precautions by following SOP strictly. DO NOT take short cuts. It is anticipated the positives in Sibu will continue to surge the next few days,” he said.

On the announcement of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) to be enforced effective today, he urged the public to strictly adhere to the latest SOPs to be provided by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) as soon as possible.

He said the council would also enhance its routine monitoring in compliance of the SOPs at places such as eateries, reflexology centres, salons and petrol stations.

“The council enforcement and public health teams will be going to the ground to check to ensure that the upcoming CMCO will be done successfully,” he said.

Sibu, Miri and Kuching have been declared Covid-19 red zones after their number of cases exceeded 40 over a two-week period.

SDMC is enforcing the CMCO on the red zones.
