Filipinos charged with possessing 36.93 grams of syabu
KOTA KINABALU: Two Filipinos were jointly charged at the Sessions Court here yesterday with possessing 36.93 grams of syabu.
Renny Usug, 20, and Jovanni Sudin, 26, who were brought before judge Azreena Aziz, face a charge under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39A (2) of the same Act.
The indictment provides for life imprisonment or a jail term of not less than five years and whippings, upon conviction.
They were alleged to have committed the offence at a car park at Bandar Sierra at 3pm on October 18, 2018.
Jovanni pleaded not guilty to the charge while no plea was taken from Renny, pending a Suluk interpreter.
The court fixed April 25-26 for Jovanni’s trial while another mention date for Reny was set for February 18.
Both accused, who were not represented, were also ordered to be further detained in custody, pending disposal of the case. Deputy public prosecutor Dinesh Raja prosecuted.
In a separate case, a man was sentenced to four months’ jail plus one stroke of the cane for entering the state illegally.
The judge imposed the sentence on Hasrin Ira after he admitted to the offence under Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act.
She also ordered for Hasrin to be referred to the Immigration Department for his biometrics data to be recorded before deportation.
Hasrin is also currently under police investigation over involvement in Abu Sayyaf militant group.
