16 remanded over temple riot

PETALING JAYA: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday issued a remand order for between two and five days against 16 individual­s, including three employees of One City Developmen­t Sdn Bhd (One City), for investigat­ion on the commotion at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, on Monday.

Magistrate Nor Ariffin Hisham issued the order against the suspects, aged between 18 and 49, to facilitate police investigat­ion f under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, Section 148 of the same law for rioting, Section 427 of the same law for committing mischief and Section 447 of the same law for criminal trespass.

Lawyers Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla and Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, who represente­d the three One City employees, when met outside the court, said their clients were in remand for between two and four days to facilitate police investigat­ion on the incident.

In the incident yesterday morning, a member of the Emergency Management Response System (EMRS) of the Fire and Rescue Department was seriously injured in a riot outside the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and had been admitted to the Sime Darby Medical Centre.

The riot started at the temple on Monday (Nov 26) morning, following a scuffle between two groups which resulted in several people being hurt and vehicles torched.
