Bid to smuggle out 79 gas cylinders foiled

TAWAU: A marine police team seized 79 cooking gas cylinders worth RM15,000 from two ‘jongkong’ boats and detained three men for trying to smuggle them out to a neighbouri­ng country, on Monday and Tuesday.

District marine police team commander DSP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim said, on Tuesday at about 5.21pm at Sungai Pukul waters, a boat was stopped and checked and a 28-year-old local man who was the skipper, failed to show a valid licence and control of goods certificat­e for the goods found in the cargo hold.

He said apart from the cooking gas cylinders, other controlled goods were also found, namely 70 packets containing 24kgs of sugar each worth about RM5,000, 55 boxes containing 17packets (1kg) of cooking oil each, worth RM2,500 and 19 boxes containing 10kgs of flour each, worth about RM300.

On the case on Monday, he said a boat was checked at the Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia jetty where 40 cooking gas cylinders worth RM8,000 were found.

He said a 23-year-old local skipper and a 34-year-old local man who claimed to be the boat owner, and the goods were detained.

He said the three men were detained under Section 21 of the Goods Control Act 1794 and Per.3(1) of the Goods Control Regulation­s 1974 for possession of the controlled goods and trying to smuggle them out.

He said both cases were based on informatio­n from the public.
