Round-the-clock police patrol in Likas Bay

- By Nancy Lai

KOTA KINABALU: Public safety measures at the park in Tanjung Lipat Likas Bay have been increased with round-theclock police patrol in the area.

City Police Chief ACP M Chandra said patrolling was done using bicycles and they would be assisted by Police Volunteer Reserve and City Hall personnel.

This, he said, was part of the district police’s ‘target hardening’ effort along the public park in Likas Bay.

“Police will conduct aggressive checks on suspicious characters at the park and arrests will be made if necessary,” he said, adding that the public should however be vigilant when carrying out recreational activities in the area.

Chandra also disclosed that police had arrested three male suspects who were accused of molesting and robbing two women joggers at the park on July 4.

The suspects, aged 16 to 20, were picked up from Kampung Likas on July 11.

The case, he said, was being investigated under Section 395/397/354 of the Penal Code. Police recovered a handphone stolen from one of the women.

According to Chandra, the incident occurred about 6.15am on July 4 as the two women were jogging at the public park.

“Before the incident, the women came across the three suspects at the car park. The suspects called out to the women but were ignored. The women then did their stretching exercise before proceeding to jog.

“As they were jogging, they again saw the three suspects sitting on a bench near an open area. The women ran past them but were shocked when a short while later they were grabbed from behind by two of the men.

“As one of the women was struggling to free herself, the third suspect grabbed her handphone, a Sony Compact from her hand. Both women managed to free themselves and ran to their car before heading straight to the police station here to lodge their report,” Chandra disclosed.

Following the report, police launched an investigation leading to the arrest of the three suspects and the recovery of the handphone worth about RM500.

Police also found a receipt for service to unlock the phone.

Chandra added that all three tested negative for drugs.
