TAMBUNAN: Geneviey Audrey Albert of Penampang Community College was crowned the state-level Community College Kaamatan Unduk Ngadau after beating 16 other participants.

The second place winner was Maclyn Vrenda Paladius from Lahad Datu, who also won the Tati Community College title, while the third place went to Joyce Ann Junis of Tambunan Community College.

The competition was held during the Entrepreneurship Promotion Carnival and Sabah CC Stomp Battle which were declared open by Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan on Sunday.

In his speech, Pairin said community colleges not only have the potential to have a major impact on society and the country in the development of entrepreneurship but can also improve skills and develop potential to form individuals and communities that are more competitive and dynamic.

He praised the commitment shown by the colleges in developing traditional sports culture and the arts of music and dance programs.

“Forming a broad generation now is not an easy task, especially with global millennium challenges that are increasingly sophisticated,” he said.

Therefore, he said efforts to diversify the Community College in conjunction with the Kaamatan program is a good platform to expose the artistic and cultural heritage to the students, the local community or those from outside Sabah as well as a platform for unity and strong understanding.

Earlier in his speech, Tambunan Community College director Jominin Goropos said the Community College is an institution that provides training and skills needed at all levels and provides opportunities for education to secondary school leavers prior to joining the labour market or continuing their education at a higher level.

There are 94 community colleges in Malaysia and eight in Sabah that offer a variety of skills courses.

Jominin said the Entrepreneurship Promotion Carnival and the Sabah Stomp Battle offered four programs, namely Entrepreneurship Program, Let’s Fit @ CC (Community College), Sabah CC Stomp Battle 2017 and the Kaamatan Festival.

“These programs are run from May 20 and 21 involving all the eight community colleges in Tawau, Semporna, Lahad Datu, Sandakan, Beaufort, Penampang, Kota Marudu and Tambunan besides the local communities," he said.
