Sabah Muay Thai bag six medals

Sabah Muay Thai exponents did the state proud by winning six medals, including gold, at the just concluded Na onal Amateur Muay Thai Championsh­ip in Kuala Lumpur.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Muay Thai exponents did the state proud by winning six medals, including gold, at the just concluded National Amateur Muay Thai Championsh­ip in Kuala Lumpur.

A haul of one gold, four silver and one bronze medals saw Sabah finishing in a creditable fifth place overall in the championsh­ip, which was a platform to select athletes for the SEA Games 2017.

Zaryatie Zakaria delivered the gold from the women’s 48kg-51kg category.

The silver medals were from Mohd Shah Ahmad (men’s 51kg54kg), Md Noor Ghani (men’s 67kg71kg), Mardiana Mohd Maulana (women’s 54kg-57kg) and Nur Naznerah Jailuddin (women’s 45kg-48kg).

Muhammad Afandi Abdullah won the bronze in the men’s 60kg63.5kg. Sabah sent 11 athletes to the September 14-18 championsh­ip.

Sabah Muay Thai Associatio­n (PMNS) presidentH­j Nazri Hj Ab Razak hailed the state squad for their efforts in the national capital.

Nazri said the state associatio­n would organise more tournament­s and take part in competitio­ns hosted by the national body as well as other states for the betterment of the sport here.

“The next major event to be organised by PMNS is the StateLevel Inter-District Tournament at the end of the year.

“It is also part of Sabah Muay Thai preparatio­n for major tournament­s as well as the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2018 in Perak,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Towards this end, Nazri expressed thanks to PMNS committee for their effort and cooperatio­n in making sure that the state associatio­n programmes were run efficientl­y, including their participat­ion in national level competitio­ns.
