Wee Wern advances to main draw of Al-Ahram Squash Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian number two women’s squash player, Low Wee Wern advanced into the main draw of the Al-Ahram Squash Open Championsh­ip after securing victory in the final qualifying match of the tournament in Egypt on Sunday.

The Penangite, however, was forced to the limit before edging the hosts youngster, Nadine Shahin winning with 11-5, 10-12, 11-3, 5-11 and 11-7 in the match which lasted about 57 minutes.

On the victory, Wee Wern noted she was happy to win the match despite it being not her best performanc­e.

“I played well in patches, she is so feisty it’s just incredible. I think I did well to hang in there and come out with a win,” she was quoted as saying in the tournament website; www. alahramsqu­ashopen.com.

Earlier, Wee Wern defeated another Egyptian player, Hania El Hammamy 11-4, 11-9 and 11-9 in the first qualifying round on Saturday.

Wee Wern is set to face an uphill task against world number eighth player, Omneya Abdel Kawy of Egypt in the opening match, yesterday.

Malaysian squash queen, Datuk Nicol David, who is vying for her second title of the season after winning the SRAM Women’s Squash Invitation­al Tournament in July, will takes on England qualifier, Fiona Moverley in the opening round yesterday.

Fiona cruised into the main draw after earning a hard-fought 6-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9 and 11-9 victory against Hana Ramadan of Egypt in the final qualifying match.

Malaysia did not send representa­tives for the men’s division of the championsh­ip which offers a total prize money of US$100,000 (RM415,000).Bernama
