Husni to highlight issues affecting Southeast Asia at IMF-World Bank
KUALA LUMPUR: Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah will be using Malaysia’s position as the spokesperson for the South East Asia Voting Group to highlight issues affecting the group during the Development Committee (DC) meeting at the IMF-World Bank Annual Spring Meetings.
The South East Asia Voting Group comprises 10 Asean member countries as well as Nepal, Fiji and Tonga.
The Ministry of Finance in a statement yesterday said the issues to be raised by the minister include global development issues that are critical in eradicating extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity and financial inclusion.
“Malaysia’s participation at the DC meeting as the spokesperson for the South East Asia Voting Group is essential to represent the voice of the constituency and highlight the region’s concerns at this international forum,” it said.
It said global issues to be actively deliberated upon during the meeting include the refugee crisis, climate change, healthcare system, disaster risk management and innovative methods of financing infrastructure development to enhance trade and investment.

Malaysian delegation to the IMFWorld Bank Meetings on April 1517 in Washington, D.C., will also be a panel speaker at the Seminar on Energy Subsidy Reform.
It said the minister will share Malaysia’s experience and approach in implementing energy subsidy reform and the transformational programmes that the government has undertaken as well as the lessons learnt.
On the sidelines of the IMFWorld Bank Meetings, Ahmad Husni will meet international rating agencies to update them on the current economic and financial developments as well as steps taken to address the challenges in the country, the ministry said.
“He will also brief them about the ongoing initiatives undertaken to strengthen the country’s fiscal and monetary position,” it added.
The IMF and World Bank Meetings is a platform for discussion and exchanging views, among others, on current issues affecting the global economy, international financial system and progress of the global development agenda, including poverty reduction.
The forum will also highlight the progress on the activities of the IMF and World Bank Group, including policies and programmes implemented in assisting member countries facing financial and development difficulties. — Bernama
