Lahad Datu parents back English Day on Tuesdays
LAHAD DATU: The state government’s move to improve English language proficiency among students with the English Day on Tuesdays was laudable, said SMK Silabukan ParentTeacher Association chairman Mohamad Sarangit.
He said the decision was appropriate to check the decline in English proficiency level among the young.
He said this effort should receive cooperation from all parties, especially parents and the public to encourage the children as well as helping them to communicate in English.
“Mastering the English is important as an international communication language and mastering it will benefit our children.
“Therefore, parents should support and encourage their children to ensure the success of this effort that aims to create better future to our children,” he said.
The implementation of the English Day on Tuesdays must be well implemented in order not to mix up, and affect the use of Bahasa Melayu.
Adelaidah Arshad, 34, said the move was a positive development to enhance the mastery of English among children, but at the same time the Malay Language should not be ignored, so that students can master both languages.
“The government should pay more attention to the implementation of this effort in the rural areas to ensure every student would benefit from this effort,” she said.
Meanwhile, Basrin Ismail described the effort as the starting point for a better education system for children.
He said this was a good effort and the implementation of this programme should be monitored to achieve its objective.
“We, as parents welcome all the efforts undertaken by the government aimed at providing better education to our children.
“It is hope that the government will keep on looking for another method or mechanism that is appropriate for our education system and implement it for the sake of our children,” he added.
On Tuesday, Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman said the government was committed to increase the mastery of English language among Sabah students and mobilize ongoing efforts with the State Education Department for that purpose.
