A close-up tour of Joe’s musical journey

Testament to Joe’s belief in the future, Gard was featured on Joe’s hip-hop talent seach ‘16 Baris’ a few years ago, and now joins his mentor in a song which Joe describes as a tribute to hiphoppers of the future.

‘Berlian’ is produced, composed and written by Din Tiger and Joe’s favourite partner in hip-hop, SonaOne.

In a recent statement, he said: “The song which may sound glamorous is actually a metaphorical reminder of life’s fleeting nature, and urges us to fully embrace each moment.

“Much like poetry set into motion, ‘Berlian’ seeks to encapsulate fleeting moments and transform them into a timeless song.”

With ‘Berlian’, Joe continues to provoke listeners and strike up fiery debates about what the future of hip-hop in Malaysia would sound like.

“It did not take us too long to complete the song’s recording. We did it all in one day,” he said.

“I wrote the first verse in less than an hour. After that I went up to the mic and had my first two bars before completing the first verse in less than 30 minutes.”

Joe added that the catchy song comes with a visually stunning music video that stars himself as well as an old friend — popular television host and actress Sazzy Falak.

“Sazzy is just the right person to be my co-star as she adds the extra punch needed in the video.”

Joe said that he was optimistic that ‘Berlian’ would be wellreceived by hip-hop fans and music lovers in general, just like his past masterpieces.

“It is like we created a diamond. Some people will appreciate diamonds and some people don’t. But diamonds are forever,” said Joe.

His foray into the music world began when he and Malique Ibrahim co-founded the hip-hop duo Too Phat in the late 1990s.

However, in 2017, he had to go solo after Malique left to embark on his own solo journey.

Joe’s recent documentary highlights the ups and downs of his life as a musician, hip-hop singer and mentor to new artistes.

Screened on Viu, ‘This Is Johan’ is presented in two parts, each being two-hours’ long and takes viewers on a close-up tour of his musical pathway.

Fans get an honest and personal exploration of the challenges and setbacks faced by Joe from various perspectives, including members of his family and some of his closest friends.

‘Berlian’ is available on all digital platforms, such as Spotify, Apple Music, KKBOX, Deezer and YouTube Music. Check out its music video, which has been released on Joe’s official YouTube channel.
