SWIMMING

My all-time favourite sport is swimming. I have simply loved water from the time I can remember. Looking at the joy I had when I was in water, my parents enrolled me for swimming lessons at the age of 2. There are various reasons why swimming would be on top of the list of sports for me, but the main reason would always remain that I love being in the water. Furthermore, swimming can be classified as an inexpensive sport. All one would need is a swimsuit and a pair of goggles to get started.

It is also essential for everyone to learn swimming in case of an emergency. Most of us always decide to take a vacation near the sea, lakes or rivers. There are possibilities of one falling into the water by accident while they are near the water source. Thus, swimming can aid in one’s survival in such cases to prevent the person from drowning. Besides being a low-cost activity, swimming is actually a very healthy hobby for people of all ages.

Swimming can also be categorised as an aerobic exercise because it aids in strengthening the heart. It helps by making the heart more efficient in pumping and thus, leading to better blood flow throughout the body. It has also been attested that aerobic exercises resist the body’s inflammatory reaction that promote heart diseases. It is not only a great way to keep fit and stay healthy, but also a fun activity where you can meet new friends.

In a nutshell, swimming is a lifetime skill that everyone should learn. Not only can it be a fun hobby which also keeps you healthy and fit, but you will never know when your ability to swim might come in handy, especially in dire situations.

PIRATE FISHING

Overfishing and illegal fishing of sharks for their fins is depleting populations worldwide. There is often a general lack of even basic management monitoring, control, and surveillance of many fisheries. A key factor is ensuring that shark fishing and shark populations are sustainable is by improving the capacity to combat pirate fishing.

A serious threat for many shark species is the growing trade in shark fins that are often used to make an expensive Asian soup. Around 100 million sharks are killed annually and they are targeted for their fins. This practice affects many different shark species, including whale sharks.

The huge demand, mainly for shark fins and a lack of management to ensure shark fisheries are sustainable are the main reasons for the overfishing of sharks. Some species, such as spiny dogfish and probeagle, are targeted primarily for their meat.

Overfishing is the overwhelming threat, with open ocean long-lines using hundreds if not thousands of hooks each catching the greatest volume of sharks globally. Damage to reef and other key habitats is also having an impact. The clearance of mangroves has negative impact on species whose young use these places as nursery grounds. The loss of living coral reefs due to sedimentation and fertilizer run-off from farmland, and climate change, will often reduce the amount of prey for sharks. Many kinds of food fishes that humans like to eat inhabit reefs, and so reefs are targeted by fishers, using types of fishing that also catch sharks.
