NEGRI RAISES RM26,000 FOR PALU
State govt aims to raise RM50,000 in total
MORE parties should come forward and donate to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami disaster in the Indonesian island of Sulawesi that killed more than 2,000 people.
Negri Sembilan Youth and Sports Development Committee chairman Mohamad Taufek Abd Ghani said all were welcome to contribute to help the victims rebuild their lives after the tragedy.
He said 24 state government departments and agencies collected donations for the victims.
“A total of RM26,481.20 has been collected and channelled to the state’s ‘Humanitarian Mission and Fund for Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia’.
“We are targeting RM50,000, which includes donations from surau and mosques in the state and we will be in touch with the state’s Islamic Religious Council to update the donation’s status.”
He added that two youth volunteers would be sent to carry out relief missions in Palu on Oct 22 and 25.
“Our first two volunteers will first observe the situation on the ground for us to prepare the aid that needs to be sent to the affected areas. We are working closely with non-governmental organisations in Sulawesi so that assistance and aid can be provided,” he said after the donation handover ceremony held at Wisma Negeri here yesterday.
Present were state assembly Speaker Zulkefly Mohamad Omar and State Rural Development Committee chairman Ismail Ahmad.
Zulkefly said aside from charity groups, individuals could help provide necessities for the survivors of the tragedy.
“We have about 150 millionaires in the country and I believe donations from them will go a long way to help meet the needs of the victims on the ground.
“The victims need food, water and shelter and other assistance to rebuild their lives.”
