1 dead, 6 hurt in 5-vehicle crash

MELAKA: A man was killed and six others injured, including two seriously, in a five-vehicle accident at Km206.1 of the NorthSouth Expressway yesterday.

Flames destroyed two vehicles after their occupants escaped.

The deceased, who died at the scene, was identified as Khor Choon Poh, 32, the driver of a Proton Persona.

The seriously injured were a passenger in Khor’s vehicle, Chiam Beng Soon, 34, and a motorcycli­st whose identity has yet to be released.

Both are in the Red Zone at the Alor Gajah Hospital’s Emergency and Trauma Unit.

State acting Traffic Enforcemen­t and Investigat­ion Department chief Deputy Superinten­dent Mohd Khairulzam­an Ishak said the 1.30am incident involved a Proton Persona, a Proton Saga BLM, Honda Insight, Nissan Grand Livina multipurpo­se vehicle and a Honda EX5 motorcycle.

He said all vehicles were travelling on the north-bound lane of the North-South Expressway .

“The Persona first crashed into the (Proton) Saga BLM, causing it to veer into the third lane, then back across the lanes into the emergency lane, where it rammed into the Grand Livina.

“Both Proton vehicles caught fire, but the occupants escaped, while passers-by pulled out the body of the deceased.”

He said the Honda Insight, Nissan Grand Livina and Honda EX5 were involved in an accident just moments earlier.

The drivers of both vehicles, the motorcycli­st and a woman and a 7-year-old child, who were in one of the vehicles, was already rescued by then.

Ayer Keroh fire station chief Mohamad Hamdan Sudin said fire fighters took 90 minutes to douse the flames on two vehicles.
