SMART Selangor Delivery Unit (SSDU) will pursue a cashless society initiative under Smart Selangor’s Smart Digital Infrastructure. Its managing director Fahmi Ngah said the initiative was aimed at promoting the use of mobile phone-based electronic micro-transactions in Selangor.

Under the initiative, he said SSDU had partnered with Axiata Digital Services Sdn Bhd to adopt the latter’s ‘Boost’ online application as its primary e-wallet application for daily transactions in Selangor.

“E-wallet will reduce the need of carrying cash to facilitate daily micro-transactions for goods and services.

“This will ensure safer and better experience for people. With the launch, Selangor will be the first state to introduce such initiative in line with Bank Negara Malaysia’s effort to promote digital payment,” Fahmi said at the briefing on the cashless society initiative, here, recently.

He said the first phase of this approach began with the introduction of the Boost e-wallet at Ramadan and Hari Raya bazaars across Selangor under five local authorities — Sepang Municipal Council, Shah Alam City Council, Subang Jaya Municipal Council, Selayang Municipal Council and Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) — which involved 6,000 to 7,000 operators.

He said MDHS had agreed to collaborate with SSDU to develop the first public cash-free zone in Kuala Kubu Baru.

SSDU will also introduce Smart Selangor Cashless Kiosks with Smart Reference functionality to cater for kioskbased payment services by councils and state agencies by the fourth quarter.
