THE government is committed to transforming the Indian community into a modern and progressive one, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He said the government had always cared about the wellbeing and challenges faced by the community.

“From estates that are now being used for something else, to the new generation which is in need of help, the government will ensure a smooth transition from estate community to a modern and progressive one.

“Therefore, I have introduced the Malaysian Indian Blueprint (MIB). Never in Malaysian history and Parliamentary Hansard has a programme like MIB been discussed in the country’s budget,” he said at the opening of the ninth Malaysia Makkal Sakti Party’s annual general meeting here yesterday.

Najib said since he became the prime minister in 2009, allocation for Tamil schools had reached an all-time high of nearly RM1 billion.

“I believe that if you want to change the fate of the Indian community, you have to start with education.

“Education is the foundation for a better future and nation. That is why you can count on my leadership to continue to develop the Indian community.”

He said during his visit to Negri Sembilan recently, he was informed by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan that the government had built the best Tamil primary school in the country in Sendayan.

“Yesterday, I heard that another school would be built in Taman Sentosa, Klang, which will be the 525th Tamil school built by the Barisan Nasional-led government.”

Najib, in his speech, called for the Indian community to choose the party that could deliver its promises.

“Everyone can talk and make promises, but the main question is whether they can deliver. BN has delivered on our promises to the Indian community and will continue to do so.

“I do not want the people to choose based on emotion. The opposition always plays hate politics to topple the government.

“But in BN, we believe in politics of building a better future for all Malaysians. This is what we must do, not to fall for empty promises (of the opposition) or what I was informed in Tamil as vetti pechu (empty promises).

“I believe if BN is given a stronger mandate in the next general election, it will contribute to the political stability in the country.”
