KUALA LUMPUR: An abstract painting by local artist Awang Damit Ahmad in 1988 was sold for RM110,000 at the Malaysia and Southeast Asian Art Auction at Galeri Prima NSTP here yesterday.

Part of Awang’s Essence of Culture Series, or EOC Series, it was the most expensive work sold at the auction by the Henry Butcher Asset Auctioneers (HBAA).

HBAA director Polenn Sim said the EOC Series, was painted between 1985 and 1995, and was the most sought after work by the 61year-old artist.

“The EOC series comprises the works that launched Awang Damit’s career. Serious collectors of paintings would definitely want them as part of their collection,” he said.

Another valuable item which received a high bid at the auction was an untitled piece from 1987 by 83-year-old local artist, Khalil Ibrahim.

Polenn said the piece, which was sold at RM100,000, generated a lot of interest from bidders because the artist, who became unable to paint after his left hand was affected due to a stroke.

Polenn said that from the 141 paintings offered at the auction yesterday, about 85 per cent were sold off, with some of them receiving bids much higher than their reserved prices.

Earlier today, a very rare Peranakan Chinese storage jar, known as a kamcheng, dated from the late 19th century, was sold for RM55,000 at the HBAA auction entitled “Treasures of the Peranakans / Straits Chinese — The Journey Continues”.

The artifact was among the 92 artifacts available at the Peranakan-themed auction here yesterday.

HBAA chief operating officer Tang Chee Meng said that the artifact attracted interest from many bidders due to its unique and intricate design.

“A Peranakan porcelain would usually have drawings of phoenix or peonies.

“This kamcheng however has drawings of children.

“The drawing of ice-crack borders with various types of flowers on the upper lid and cover is also extremely rare,” he said.

Tang said the reserve price of the kamcheng was set between RM20,000 and RM30,000.
