YANG di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir’s younger sister, Tunku Datin Deanna Tuanku Munawir, was laid to rest next to the Tuanku Munawir Royal Mosque here yesterday afternoon.

Tunku Deanna, 62, was buried after Friday prayers, in a ceremony steeped in royal tradition, at a special plot for royal family members located next to the royal mausoleum.

Earlier, Tunku Deanna’s remains were bathed at Istana Besar Seri Menanti, and members of the public paid their last respects between 9am and 12pm.

At noon, her coffin was taken to the nearby mosque for funeral prayers led by state mufti Datuk Mohd Yusoff Ahmad.

Present were Tunku Ampuan Tuanku Najihah Tunku Besar Burhanuddin and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

It was learnt that Tuanku Muhriz is on his way home from overseas and is scheduled to land at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport this evening.

After prayers, the funeral procession moved to the burial plot and her coffin was lowered into the grave by Armed Forces and police personnel.

Tuanku Munawir Royal Mosque imam Abdul Rahman Ibrahim recited talqin. This was followed by Tuanku Najihah pouring scented water on the grave and scattering flower petals.

Tunku Deanna’s husband, Tengku Datuk Amran Tengku Mohd Yusof, and her three daughters, aged between 34 and 41, proceeded to pour scented water.

“She was a down-to-earth person and always greeted everybody she met, including the nurses and the hospital cleaner,” said Tengku Datuk Amran.

“She was friendly with everyone and sometimes even bought the nurses lunch during her medical treatment at HUKM (Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), and was very popular among the nurses.”

Tunku Deanna died on Thursday at the Damansara Specialist Centre due to complications from diabetes.

Her remains were brought to Istana Besar Seri Menanti on Thursday night.

The funeral ceremony ended at 2.45pm.

Among those who offered their condolences were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“My condolences to DYMM Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan over the passing of YAM Tunku Deanna Tuanku Munawir. May Allah bless her soul. Al-Fatihah,” the prime minister tweeted.
