A Cut Above the Rest
Tiffany & Co sets itself apart by being the first to share the full craftsmanship journey of its diamonds
Tiffany & Co’s commitment to sustainability and traceability of its diamond shines brightest for ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance)-inspired investors.
The company launched its Diamond Source Initiative back in 2019 and became the first global luxury jeweller in 2020 to disclose the countries where its newly sourced, individually registered diamond of 0.18 carats or larger are crafted.
This information will be available from any sales professionals, and printed on the Tiffany Diamond Certificate.
The “Diamond Craft Journey” starts from the source, which demonstrates Tiffany’s push for responsible sourcing. These regions or countries of origin are usually referred to as the provenance of the diamond in the industry.
This is followed by preparation where only 0.04% of the world’s gem-grade diamonds are accepted. The rigorous quality standards are put in place to ensure all of Tiffany’s diamonds are of the highest quality.
Tiffany will then cut and polish these diamonds at its workshops in Belgium, Botswana, Mauritius, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Meanwhile, grading and quality validation takes place in Tiffany’s workshop in New York where the superlative grading requirements and standards are established. Tiffany’s diamonds are meticulously evaluated at the network of Tiffany Gemological Laboratories in the US, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Finally, Tiffany sets most of its diamonds at its workshops in the US. Here, setters will adjust each prong and basket on an engagement ring by hand individually to reveal the beauty of each stone.
When this is done, a Tiffany diamond is now ready to be placed in its iconic Tiffany Blue Box and bag.
TRACING TRANSPARENCY
According to a recent survey data from Tracemark’s Sustainable Luxury Consumer Report 2021, 71% of the consumers will choose a piece of jewellery for its traceability and up to 77.5% of consumers would pay more for a traceable product.
The data also shows that 94% of consumers believe jewellery brands should be more transparent about the provenance of the diamonds.
As consumers become savvier and more knowledgeable, demand regarding transparency and trustworthiness of the high jewellery they are buying becomes more important.
As a pioneer in responsible sourcing and diamond traceability, Tiffany’s high jewellery pieces will be among the top of the list for investors and collectors alike.
Tiffany’s Diamond Craft Journey is more than just a map of where a diamond has been but it represents the positive impact of its operations on the local community, human rights and the environment.
Aside from the push for diamond traceability, Tiffany is also committed in its sustainable business practices. With the Ring Upgrade Program at Tiffany, this allows you to upgrade your Tiffany’s engagement ring. More details on the Upgrade Program is available when you speak to Tiffany’s diamond expert.
