Disabled people play big role in Kuwait: Al-Baghli
Kuwaiti citizen turns disability into motivation
KUWAIT CITY, Dec 3, (KUNA): Minister of Social Affairs and Women and Children’s Affairs, head of the supreme council for disability affairs Eng. Mai Al-Baghli affirmed that disabled people play an important role in society, underlining the need to activate the articles of Law 10/2010 on the rights of people with disability.
Her remarks came in a press statement on the sidelines of the (I’m talented 3) event, as part of the International Day of Disabled Persons, organized with the presence of acting director general of the Public Authority for Disability Affairs Hanadi Al-Mubailish, in cooperation with the Avenues mall on Saturday.
Kuwait is continuously developing programs to provide special needs people with a better life and protect their rights, said the minister.
On her part, Al-Mubailish told KUNA that the authority believes that such events and conferences play an important role in resolving the issues facing disabled people.
Fruitful role
Meanwhile, a Kuwaiti citizen of special challenges has successfully coped with his physical disability, playing a fruitful role in the society and partaking in diverse relief and humanitarian activities
“I had been born with disability but with a sound brain and spirit,” said Salem Amer Al-Dhafiri, a struggler of the special challenges’ segment, who has succeeded in rising up to the challenges, setting an example to follow, particularly for people of such cases.
Al-Dhafiri said in his interview with Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), marking the International Day of Persons with Disability, that the impairment, instead of being a hurdle, stimulated him and nudged him to “attain my aspirations.”
The citizen became handicapped after death of his twin brother in infancy due to some health complications. “At six years of age, I started coping with the disability and realized that only perseverance will make me progress because I believe that the impairment is in the mind, not the body or the limbs.”
Additionally, his family have been quite supportive and have made no bids to isolate him from the society.
Now, he advocates the initiative, “the week of solidarity with the handicapped,” aimed at altering misconceptions and promoting creative works by the special challenges’ segment.
The State of Kuwait, since onset of legislations and development, has sought to furnish special needs’ citizens with all requirements for good living and attaining their aspirations.
Specialized medicine for these cases at Al-Jahraa dentistry center is a tangible example how the state of Kuwait has been seeking to attain this objective, actively.
Speaking on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, falling on Saturday, the head of the ward, Dr. Dalal Al-Kharraz, said in an interview with Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the doctors and staff in the section have been providing treatment and extraordinary care for such cases since 12 years ago.
The center receives autistics, Down’s syndrome cases, cardiac and Alzheimer cases, provides transplants and chemotherapy, she said, noting that in 2021, up to 1,100 cases had been treated -- a high number reached despite difficulties resulting from the coronavirus outbreak.
Dr. Al-Kharraz said that the ward receives six-10 cases a day including those that need surgeries.
Kuwait’s Training Gate International held a celebration on Thursday to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, proclaimed in 1992 by UN General Assembly resolution 47/3 and observed globally on December 3.
This year’s celebration is themed “Transformative Solutions for Inclusive Development - the Role of Innovation in Fueling an Accessible and Equitable World.
The Training Gate held its three-day celebration at the Avenues Mall in collaboration with the
3/4GeneralSecretariat of The Supreme Council for Planning and Development and the UN Development Program (UNDP) as well as volunteers from various segments of the society.
