Rhode Island tops Charlotte in Hawaii’s Diamond Head Classic

(AP) HONOLULU, Dec 24, (AP): Fatts Russell scored 20 points, Cyril Langevine had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Rhode Island beat Charlotte 75-61 in the Diamond Head Classic. Rhode Island started the game by scoring the first nine points and added a 13-0 run for a 25-5 lead at the 11:29 mark. URI led by 20 points until a 14-2 run kept Charlotte within reach at the break.

Russell scored 10 points in the first half, Jeff Dowtin added nine and Rhode Island led 37-28 at the break. Jon Davis scored 10 points for Charlotte, with seven coming from the free-throw line.

Christion Thompson added 12 points and five blocks for Rhode Island (6-4), and Dowtin finished with 15 points. Rhode Island tied a tournament record with nine blocked shots.

Davis finished with 14 points and Malik Martin added 16 points for Charlotte (3-7), which was 6 of 17 from the field in the first half. The 49ers were within 58-53 with five minutes remaining. New Mexico St 75, Washington St 72

In Las Vegas, JoJo Zamora made a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left and scored 28 points to help New Mexico State beat Washington State 75-72 at the Las Vegas Classic.

Zamora sank 9 of 11 shots, including six 3-pointers, and he also had seven assists. He was left open against a zone defense and hit the 3-pointer from the corner in front of the NMSU bench.

A.J. Harris added 15 points for NMSU (10-3) and Eli Chuha had 11 points and 12 rebounds. NMSU beat Washington State for the second time this month, winning 69-63 on Dec 1.

C.J. Elleby scored 20 points to lead Washington State (7-5). Carter Skaggs made all four of his shots from distance and scored 14 points.

After an offensive rebound, Elleby hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to tie it at 72 with 14.3 seconds to go.

TCU 82, Bucknell 65 In Honolulu, Desmond Bane scored 16 points to lead six TCU players in double figures and the Horned Frogs beat Bucknell 82-65 in the semifinals of the Diamond Head Classic.

TCU (10-1) will play Indiana State in the championsh­ip game on Tuesday night.

Jaylen Fisher and Kevin Samuel each added 14 points for the Horned Frogs, who won their seventh straight game. Kouat Noi chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds and J.D. Miller had 12 points. Alex Robinson had his second straight game with 11 assists as he’s reached double-digit helpers in five games this season.

There were six lead changes in the final 3:30 of the first half and TCU scored the last four points for a 44-41 lead.

Kimbal Mackenzie had 16 points for the Bison (5-6). Nate Sestina added 14 points with 11 rebounds and Nate Jones scored 12 points on four 3-pointers. Drake 110, San Diego 103, 2OT In Las Vegas, Nick Norton scored 14 of his career-high 31 points in the second overtime and Drake beat San Diego 110-103 in the championsh­ip game of the Las Vegas Classic.

Brady Ellingson hit a 3-pointer for Drake in the closing seconds of regulation and San Diego’s half-court heave went wide.

The Bulldogs hit seven of their last eight shots of regulation. Anthony Murphy made 1 of 2 free throws to tie it at 93 in the first overtime and San Diego got to the other end for a shot but it didn’t hit the rim at the buzzer.

Norton banked in a 3-pointer to give Drake a 103-100 lead and he made six straight free throws in the final minute.

Ellingson made four 3-pointers and scored 25 points for Drake (10-2). Norton made five 3s, hit all 10 of his free-throw attempts and also had six rebounds and seven assists.

Olin Carter III led the Toreros (104) with 30 points. Isaiah Wright had 25 points and six assists and Isaiah Pineiro added 20 points and eight rebounds.

Hawaii 70, Colorado 62, OT In Honolulu, Zigmars Raimo had 14 points and 17 rebounds, Jack Purchase added 14 points and 10 boards and Hawaii beat Colorado 70-62 in overtime in the Diamond Head Classic.

Purchase hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 54 and Brocke Stepteau made a driving layup on their next possession to give Hawaii a lead with 32 seconds left in regulation. McKinley Wright IV answered with a jumper, but missed the chance at a 3-point play and Purchase was off on a 3-point attempt before the buzzer.

Stepteau opened the scoring in the extra session with a 3-pointer and capped it with two free throws with eight seconds left in Hawaii’s first overtime game of the season. Colorado only made one field goal in overtime.

Eddie Stansberry chipped in with 18 points for Hawaii (7-5) and Stepteau finished with 13.

Wright had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Buffaloes (8-3), who play at Arizona on Thursday. Lucas Siewert added 19 points and Tyler Bey grabbed 10 rebounds. Neither team had a double-digit lead.

Indiana St 84, UNLV 79 In Honolulu, Jordan Barnes had 28 points and five assists, Tyreke Key added 16 points and Indiana State beat UNLV 84-79 in the semifinals of the Diamond Head Classic.

Barnes’ 3-pointer with 43 seconds left extended Indiana State’s lead to 81-77 and he added two free throws on their next possession. UNLV missed a shot and Key made 1 of 2 free throws to seal it.

Emondre Rickman added 13 points with two blocked shots and Bronson Kessinger had 11 points for Indiana State (8-3). Rickman needs two blocks to tie Nate Green for fourth in program history.

Barnes led the way in the first half with 11 points as the Sycamores were ahead 35-28.

Amauri Hardy tied a career high with 22 points for the Runnin’ Rebels (6-5). Freshman Joel Ntambwe added 21 points and 15 rebounds for his third straight double-double and Kris Clyburn had 15 points.

UNLV extended its NCAA record of making a 3-pointer to 1,050 straight games.

CSU Northridge 81, Rider 80 In Las Vegas, Lamine Diane scored 24 points and Terrell Gomez added 21 as Cal State Northridge beat Rider 8180 in the Las Vegas Classic.

Darius Brown II made two free throws with 11 seconds left to give CSUN an 81-80 lead. At the other end, Jordan Allen’s shot was blocked and Tyere Marshall’s putback attempt was no good as time expired.

Gottfried had 10 points and nine rebounds. Gomez made a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to extend CSUN’s lead to 41-33.

Frederick Scott had 21 points and seven rebounds for the Broncs (5-6). Allen added 17 points and Marshall 13. Scott averaged 19 points and 7.5 rebounds per game during the tournament.

Rider, which was without starters Dimencio Vaughn and Stevie Jordan, concluded a four-game road trip, traveling over 8,700 miles.

Houston 75, Coppin St 44 In Houston, undefeated Houston pushed aside winless Coppin State for yet another home victory.

Corey Davis had 16 points, Breaon Brady added 13 and No. 21 Houston beat Coppin State 75-44 to improve to 12-0 and extend the nation’s longest home winning streak to 25.

Davis was 4 of 9 from 3-point range, and Brady was 6 of 8 from the field.

Armoni Brooks added 10 points and nine rebounds to help the Cougars remain one of five undefeated Division I teams.

Houston finished with 17 assists on 28 made field goals.

Houston took over the longest home winning streak Saturday night when Montana beat South Dakota State to end the Jackrabbit­s’ home streak at 26.

Cedric Council had nine points and 12 rebounds for Coppin State, at 0-14 one of two remaining winless teams. The Eagles shot 22 percent.

SIUE 82, N. Colorado 72 In Las Vegas, Tyresse Williford tied a career high with 25 points and Southern Illinois-Edwardsvil­le beat Northern Colorado 82-72 in the Las Vegas Classic.

David McFarland had 17 points, six rebounds and five steals for SIUE (3-8), which ended a five-game road losing streak. Christian Ellis and Brandon Jackson scored 11 points apiece as SIUE wrapped up a four-game, sevenday road trip.

SIUE led 38-35 at the break, but Northern Colorado rallied for a 58-49 lead with 13:03 to play. The Cougars went on top for good on a pair of Williford free throws for a 70-69 lead with 2:40 left and SIUE made 8 of 8 free throws in the final three minutes to seal it. The Cougars finished 20 of 27 from the stripe. St. Francis (NY) 72, Manhattan 56

In New York, Glenn Sanabria scored 16 points, Rosel Hurley had 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists and St. Francis (NY) beat Manhattan 72-56.

Deniz Celen added 12 points and Cori Johnson had 11 for St. Francis (85), which won its fifth straight at home. Last season the Terriers posted a 10-3 record at home. The Terriers have won their most games in non-league play since the 2013-14 season.

Pauly Paulicap, the reigning MAAC defensive player of the year, had 17 points and four blocks for the Jaspers (2-10), who have lost seven straight. Manhattan is 0-6 on the road.

Paulicap has blocked at least three shots in a game 16 times in his career. Manhattan closed the first half on a 10-0 run to tie it at 28.

It was the 89th meeting in the series, with Manhattan holding the advantage at 53-36.
