Formula One team bosses have voted Lewis Hamilton the sport’s best driver, despite the Briton losing his title to Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg, in an annual Autosport magazine poll.

Germany’s Rosberg, who won his first world championsh­ip in a tense Abu Dhabi season-ender last Sunday, was third in the secret vote behind Red Bull’s 19-year-old Dutch sensation Max Verstappen. Red Bull’s Australian Daniel Ricciardo was fourth. (RTRS)

Haye throws punch:

There were ugly scenes at a press conference to promote their 2017 heavyweigh­t showdown as David Haye threw a punch at Tony Bellew on Wednesday.

The British rivals, who will go head to head in London on March 4, had to be separated and marshalled into different rooms having spent the previous 20 minutes trying to shout over each other. (AFP)

Bobridge retires:

Australian three-time world track champion Jack Bobridge quit the sport Wednesday aged just 27 with rheumatoid arthritis taking a heavy toll.

The reigning Australian national road champion, who also has two silver medals from three Olympics, was diagnosed with the chronic condition in 2010. (AFP)

Bonus points introduced:

Attacking rugby will be rewarded with bonus points in next year’s Six Nations, organisers said on Wednesday, including match winners taking four points instead of two.

The Six Nations is the last major rugby tournament to introduce bonus points — Super Rugby had them from the inception of the competitio­n in 1996, the World Cup brought them in from 2003 and the southern hemisphere Rugby Championsh­ip and European Champions Cup also awards them. (AFP)
