‘Kuwaitis hold high positions in int’l journalist­ic organizati­ons’

Kuwait, EU sign MOU to boost cooperatio­n

KUWAIT CITY, July 19, (KUNA): Minister of Informatio­n and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah hailed Tuesday the Kuwaiti media personnel for succeeding to occupy high positions in both Arab and internatio­nal journalist­ic organizati­ons.

The Minister’s statements came during his receotion today of newly-appointees, Deputy Chairman of the Arab Journalist­s Union Adnan Al-Rashid, Member of the follow-up committee for the Internatio­nal Federation of Journalist­s (IFJ) general conference Jassem Kamal, and Member of the executive committee for the Internatio­nal Federation of Journalist­s (IFJ) Dahiran Aba-Al-Khail.

Sheikh Salman said that Kuwait expects from them to support their country’s higher interest, adding that the Kuwaiti leadership would not hesitate to offer all sorts of suuport to them to execute their work at the local, regional or internatio­nal arenas.

Meanwhile, Al-Rashid, Kamal, and Aba-Al-Khail expressed their content by the support given to the Kuwaiti media personnel and valued the recognitio­n by Sheikh Salman Al-Humoud.

Meanwhile, the EU and Kuwait signed here Tuesday a Memorandum of Understand­ing to encourage cooperatio­n between Kuwait and the EU in many areas through the EUs foreign service, called the European Action External Service.

The MOU was signed by Kuwait’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Suleiman Al-Jarallah and EU High Representa­tive Federica Mogherini.

Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) and Kuwait TV, Al-Jarallah explained that this MOU offers Kuwait the opportunit­y to cooperate with the 28-member European bloc outside the EU, for example to give aid and assistance the EU provides to Africa.

“It also gives us the opportunit­y to cooperate with the EU in areas like energy, investment and in many areas which strengthen the cooperatio­n between Kuwait and the EU”, he said.

Al-Jarallah noted that the EU is a big organisati­on capable of offering assistance and expertise to other countries.

“Through this MOU, we can profit from the expertise and capabiliti­es of the EU in Kuwait and also outside Kuwait”, he said.

Al-Jarallah said his meeting with Mogehrini covered bilateral ties and cooperatio­n, regional issues and the EUs role in these issues, and added that the EUs influence on these regional issues is very strong and effective.

He noted that since many years now the EU and the Gulf Cooperatio­n Council have held negotiatio­ns to sign a free trade agreement and said he hoped that “the day comes when we sign this agreement and we hope that this will not be long.” Al-Jarallah described the current state of relations between the EU and Kuwait as “excellent” and noted that there is continuous contacts between the two sides.

“We look with optimism to the future of EU-Kuwait ties and we are on the right path to strengthen these ties which will serve the interests of Kuwait and generally of the GCC,” he added.
