8TURN shows off new hairdos, ambition to corner K-pop scene
When the eight members of K-pop boy band 8TURN walked in for an interview with The Korea Times, the atmosphere in the room instantly brightened, with their stunning, newly bleached blonde hair.
The octet — comprising Jaeyun, Myungho, Minho, Yoonsung, Haemin, Kyungmin, Yungyu, and Seungheon — cheerfully talked about their transformation, which conveniently aligns with the upcoming release of their third mini-album, “STUNNING,” at a cafe in southern Seoul, Jan. 2.
For Haemin, it was the first time in his life to dye his hair blonde.
“It’s hard to see myself in the mirror because the new hair feels a bit awkward,” he said. “Since all the members have the same blonde hair, sometimes we can’t discern who is who from behind.”
Yoonsung, having undergone several bleaching procedures to achieve a specific hue, emphasized his commitment to hair care despite the damage.
“After repeated bleachings, my hair became damaged and frizzy. So I cover my hair during showers and leave it on as long as possible. That’s my little secret to maintaining healthy hair,” he shared.
The sudden hair color change signals the imminent release of their third mini-album, “STUNNING,” arriving just seven months after their previous endeavor.
The album, described as a fusion of “coolness and confidence,” reflects their artistic growth and individuality.
Yungyu, having contributed to the lyrics of the lead single “RU-PUM PUM,” along with bandmate Seungheon, revealed what he focuses on during the creative process.
“I tried to express a relaxed confidence and define our musical direction in a cool way,” he said.
Jaeyun, the team’s leader, highlighted their trademark performance as another aspect of the new album.
“This third mini-album is a fun way to find each individual’s freewheeling style in our perfectly synchronized choreography,” he said. “From a distance, we have disciplined moves, but looking at each member separately reveals each of our unique styles standing out.”
After finishing his thought, he briefly demonstrated the “PUM PUM Dance,” the boxing-inspired choreography of the song, with member Myungho.
Debuting in January 2023, 8TURN has progressed swiftly through its first year, forging strong bonds between the members.
“We engage in frequent communication since we are together every day. Whether it’s a day off or a special occasion, we often gather for dinner. We also share open feedback on our performances, sitting in a circle,” Yungyu revealed.
Yoonsung provided a more candid story, saying, “As a group of eight males, conflicts and fights naturally occur between us, but we all acknowledge that the emphasis lies in reconciling and improving our teamwork after such incidents. So as time progresses, I think our teamwork has grown a lot.”
Reflecting on a year as a K-pop boy band, the members acknowledged the demanding lifestyle. Minho encapsulated the commitment, noting, “I always dedicate long hours, practicing for self-improvement from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day.”
Motivated by a desire to leave an indelible mark on the K-pop scene, the group draws inspiration from more experienced K-pop artists.
Myungho revealed that his role model is Baekhyun of EXO.
“I got to be on stage with EXO’s Baekhyun last year and heard him sing during rehearsals. I instantly ran out to see him perform,” he said. “His talent and overall stage presence captivated me, not to mention his skills in singing. After that experience, I have been trying hard to become a star just like him.”
Seungheon, the youngest member of the team, was inspired by rapper Zico during a performance in Thailand.
“He sang multiple songs by himself without any sign of fatigue and he had such a great stage presence that it didn’t feel like he was performing alone; it looked so cool,” he said.
“That’s why we’re always determined and working hard to enjoy every moment on stage.”
