Ronaldo Bowers is now a step closer to achieving his lifelong dream of becoming a member of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).

After reaching out to THE STAR with the aim of harvesting funds for scoliosis corrective surgery, he reached his target goal of $500,000 two weeks ago.

“We feel happy, and right now we are glorifying God because he is on his way to a change. The main target has been fulfilled and we are grateful; to God be the glory,” Ronaldo’s mother, Maxine Bowers, told THE WEEKEND STAR. The 17-year old was diagnosed with scoliosis in February and was concerned that the illness would crush his chance to be a soldier.

However, Ronaldo will undergo the surgery, at a cost of $1.4 million, in October, after persons read the article and decided to assist him. Bowers had been able to raise some of the money herself. “I got donations from family, close friends and church brethren who saw the article and reached out to me. I’m 100 per cent grateful because I didn’t see a way out and the Lord made a way for me, so I appreciate it,” Bowers said. As for Ronaldo, he was always hopeful about achieving his goals and now feels like life is working in his favour.

“I received all the money and now I have a chance at to be a soldier, because I can do the surgery. I feel great,” he said

The family has great expectations for Ronaldo’s future and is hopeful that his surgery and follow-up sessions will be a success.

“Me just a say a special prayer for each and everyone that reached out. I appreciate it. This is how we should look out for one another and help where we can,” Bowers said.
