LESBIAN SERIES DRAWS ATTENTION

-

Darien Brown, one of the creators and writers of a lesbian web series ‘She Like Girlz’, says he is surprised by some of the persons who follow the series which is streamed on YouTube. He says even Christians and Rastafarians, who would usually be against the same-sex relationships, have been reaching out to the persons behind the series to tell them that they have been doing a good job. “A lot of corporate people, some Rastaman, weh woulda bun fire on the show, even Christians been telling us they love it, and it helps them accept themselves more. Most Jamaicans overseas commend us for being brave ‘cause they never envisioned a show like this in Jamaica,” Brown said. The series was the idea of his friend and recording artiste Shawna Hunter, who goes by the stage name Dolli Difference. It also has a Jamaican cast, including the likes of Chantaye Thomas, Sheckola Daley, Shevon Bennett, Kayle Allena, and Kimberly Hudson.

And although the series, which is in its second season, has received a lot of backlash, Brown said that a lot of persons keenly anticipate the episodes every week.

“They got the first channel banned at almost a million views, now the new channel is over 500,000,” he said.

NOT PROMOTING LESBIANISM

He was quick to point out that he is not promoting the lifestyle that is considered to be taboo in Jamaica, despite how real the visuals seem.

“It doesn’t display any real hardcore nudity in the final product. But on set it’s more raw, so I have to be picky with my angles because the actresses are sometime fully nude for the scene,” he explained.

Meanwhile, dancehall artiste Shauna Chyn, who has admitted that she is bisexual, said that she isn’t surprised by the interest in the lesbian series.

“Straight people watch a lot of Love and Hip Hop, [and] there are gay people in shows like those and straight people love it,” she said.

While she believes that some persons in the wider public might have a problem with the series, she believes that a lot of persons will watch it secretly.

“Dem a go hide and watch it, but dem nah go mek nobody know say dem a watch it,” she said.
