Body of Manchester man found in tank

- Tamara Bailey

GEORGE’S VALLEY, MANCHESTER: THE MANCHESTER police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found in a water tank at his Sweden Street home in George’s Valley in the parish.

The deceased is 58-year-old Michael Cornwall, otherwise known as ‘Mikey’.

According to police reports, Cornwall, whose body was discovered afloat in the water tank approximately 12:30 p.m. by neighbours, is suspected to have drowned.

A source close to the family told The Gleaner that Cornwall had served time in prison for murder some time ago and did odd jobs around the town to get by.

“He wasn’t employed to the tax office, but he was always there, on the outside, helping people fill out forms and showing them where to go to get things done, and people would give him a little change,” the source, who requested anonymity, said.

“He was a very intelligent man, and just looking at him you couldn’t tell that he was so intelligent.”

The source said she saw nothing in recent times to suggest that he was despondent and wanted to end his life.

“He broke his leg some time ago. That’s why he walks with a limp, and I remember after that period he was very depressed, but I can’t say if he was going through anything since of late and would want to take the route of suicide. I really don’t know,” the source added.

A driving instructor who frequents the tax office in Mandeville said many would have heard of Cornwall’s past but still respected his intellect and drive.

“He was a very nice man and he had brain, too. He would look out for us as well, getting clients for us who wanted lessons,” the instructor told The Gleaner. “It’s really sad to hear of his end.”
