Powell, Shelly for Cayman meet

FORMER WORLD 100 metres record holder Asafa Powell and 2008 and 2012 Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will line up in the men’s and women’s sprint at the Cayman Invitational meet today.

The 35-year-old Powell will be competing for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury in February.

Powell will be joined in the event by countrymen Senoj-Jay Givans and Tyquendo Tracey. Also down to face the starter are Caymanian Kemar Hyman and Keston Bledman from Trinidad and Tobago.

Fraser-Pryce, who will be competing for the second time this season, will line-up against fellow Jamaicans Sherone Simpson and Schillonie Calvert-Powell.

In her first competitive race of the season, Fraser-Pryce clocked 11.52 seconds at the JAAA All Comers meet earlier this month.

The American trio of Aaliyah Brown, Destinee Brown, and Jenna Prandini are the other top contenders in the event.

National recorder Rusheen McDonald, Javon Francis, and schoolboy sensation Christopher Taylor will run in the men’s 400m, where they will face Americans David Verburg and Vernon Norwood and Chidi Okezie of Nigeria.

Other Jamaicans down to compete at the meet are the 2017 World Championships 400m hurdles bronze medallist Ristananna Tracey; Commonwealth Games 110m hurdles finalist De’Jour Russell; and sprinter Jevaughn Minzie, who will run the 200m.
