C’bar’s Stephens in top form at Camperdown Classic
CALABAR HIGH’S Class One sprinters, led by Michael Stephens, were in immaculate form at yesterday’s Camperdown Classic at the National Stadium.
Stephens, who opened his season a week ago with 10.48 seconds for 100 metres at the Youngster Goldsmith meet, was even more impressive yesterday, clocking a personal best 10.32. After a quick start, he cruised past the finish line with a lot in hand.
“Didn’t expect that fast time, but I prayed for a personal best and I got it,” Stephens said.
He added: “In the warm-up area, I was a bit ‘negative’ because of the heavy wind and I also felt some niggles in my left hamstring. However, I just executed the first 30 metres, and after coming out of the drive phase, I hit cruise control and the momentum took me through.”
Two of his teammates, Christopher Taylor and De’Jour Russell, who were competing for the first time this season, also had good results. Taylor won his heat in 10.57, running in a negative wind of 3.4 metres per second to finish third overall.
Jamaica College’s Michael Everett, however, spoilt Russell’s season debut after winning his heat in 10.53 in a negative wind of 3.5 seconds to finish second overall as Russell clocked 10.62 seconds for fourth overall.
Earlier, Stephens and Russell teamed up with Anthony Carpenter and Rosean Henry to win the Class One 4x100 metres in 40.14 seconds. Jamaica College were second in 40.45, with Wolmer’s Boy’s taking third in 41.13.
