‘Hurricane Honeymoon’ hits Little Theatre tomorrow
THE MERE mention of the name Patrick Brown causes local play fans to become expectant. This, therefore, accounts for the eager anticipation that awaits tomorrow’s opening of his latest comedic salvo, Hurricane Honeymoon, which blows into the Little Theatre (Tom Redcam Avenue) for an 8 p.m. performance, kick-starting a three-week run.
Local fans have become accustomed to Brown’s plays being staged at the Jambiz home base at Centerstage Theatre in New Kingston. This limited engagement at the Little Theatre opens a new chapter in the annals of Jambiz as they seek to offer more options to its growing fan base.
The laugh-a-line comedy will feature wily comedic veteran Glen ‘Titus’ Campbell, alongside new shining stars in Jamaican theatre Akeem Mignott, Shantol Jackson, Natalee Cole, and Ricky Rowe.
This is in keeping with the long-standing policy of the producer (Jambiz) in presenting a mix of youth and experience in its productions, a policy that has served them well over the years.
Rehearsals have been on in earnest since the beginning of April, with the bubbly set of actors hard at work in creating a work of art while, nonetheless, having lots of fun in the process.
The playwright himself, who shares directing responsibilities with the celebrated director Trevor Nairne, was upbeat about the work being put in by the young actors in breathing life into the characters he has created.
He was so impressed that he was moved to express the view that Hurricane Honeymoon packs enough comedic energy to be classified as a Category 1 entertainment force, with a high enough comedic quotient to blow away patrons with sheer fun and laughter.
In giving a sneak-peek into what the story is about, Brown outlined that Hurricane Honeymoon offers an extremely humorous look at marriage through the eyes of newly-weds John and Hilda Charm.
The loving couple arrives at the Pleasure Beach Hotel with no suspicion of the deep, dark secrets about to be exposed.
STORM OF EMOTIONS
As skeletons start to emerge from closets, the shabby honeymoon suite soon becomes a war zone, and with a real hurricane closing in, the newly-weds find themselves embroiled in a honeymoon from hell.
Caught in this storm of emotions is Marley, the hotel’s maintenance man, who finds himself having to act as referee, marriage counsellor, and even an unsuspecting participant in a love triangle.
After tomorrow’s opening, Hurricane Honeymoon will play Wednesdays to Fridays at 8 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The gala opening will serve as a joint fundraiser for the Kiwanis Club of Portmore and Sagicor EBC Pension Fund. Other deserving entities have also secured benefit performances to raise well-needed funds. The show is slated to run until mid-June.
